Dermatude Facial with Bloomin Beautiful

How does Meta Therapy work?
Image from Dermatude.com

Working as a Beauty Editor definitely has some fab perks, getting to try new and excitement treatments is by far the best one.

Working with Total Swindon means I've been able to work with some fantastic experts in the beauty field, and none more so than Caroline from Bloomin Beautiful (a rather fabulous beauticians based in Swindon).

I first went into Bloomin Beautiful to experience an Environ Facial and skin scan - which was great. You can read my full review here. The skin scan was a great way of really looking into your skin's health, and was very useful in helping you decide on the right products best suited for your skin type.

My biggest problem, apart from dreaded hormonal breakouts, is the slight scaring I have on my cheeks and forehead. I had never really thought much about how to improve the appearance of these, as I assumed the only way would be expensive (and painful) laser treatment.

That is before I was introduced to Dermatude - which I really knew very little about. Dermatude is a type of Meta Therapy that involves making lots of tiny, (as in so small you can’t see them), micro-perforations on the top layer of the skin. Now this might sound painful, but I can assure you it really wasn’t too bad at all – waxing hurts a lot more!

Review // The Body Shop Nutriganics Smoothing Eye Cream

Wednesday, 10 September 2014

This year I celebrated my 27th birthday, and although I am by no means old, it got me thinking about anti-aging.

When should we start thinking about this?

I think it's important to start thinking about anti-aging before it happens - prevention is better than cure after all!

I have heard people say you should start wearing anti-aging products in your early twenties - which I definitely didn't do! I have been careful to limit my sun exposure, I don't smoke and I rarely drink - all things renowned to aggravate the aging process.

Hitting 27, and my skin having started to settle, I thought it was about time I at least gave it a thought. Until recently I was still looking for anti-blemish over anti-ageing - so I didn't really pay that much attention to anti-aging products! One thing that has always worried me about anti-aging skin care is the richness of the creams. For someone like me, who has suffered from blemish prone skin, I am always cautious about what I put on my face through fear of provoking breakouts. Heavy oily creams have always been a no no.

Having done my research, it became apparent that the delicate skin around the eyes was one of the most noticeable areas of facial aging. I starting looking into anti-aging eye creams, and oh boy there are a lot out there!

I ended up purchasing The Body Shop's Nutriganics Smoothing Eye Cream at £14. It was by chance that I ended up seeing this product - I was given a £10 off a £20 spend voucher and thought i'd stock up on some bits. I will add here that I am really glad I did find this cream, I love it and will be replacing it when it runs out.

The cream is not designed to just 'reduce the appearance of fine lines' - which so many products claim to do, instead it is designed for the first signs of aging. It soothes the eye area leaving it soft and supple without being heavy or sticky. Keeping the eye area well hydrated is key to reducing the onset of wrinkles. The cream's ingredients are 99% of natural origin - which is always a plus.

My eyes feel fresher, and my make-up applies really well over this product. I don't actually have any fine lines around my eyes - so I cannot comment on that. But I have seen an improvement in the appearance of my under eye skin.  I would recommend this product for anyone in their twenties as a fab first eye cream.

Fingers crossed it will be a while before I have to up my anti-aging game!

What anti-aging skin care do you use?

Beau Jardin Luxury Hand Creams

Monday, 1 September 2014

I have a 'thing' for all things floral and/or vintage inspired - and this doesn't stop when it comes to buying beauty products.

Beau Jardin from Heathcote & Ivory make the most gorgeous toiletry products. All their packaging has been beautifully created in a vintage French style. Seriously, vintage and French - does it get much better???

I've had the pleasure of trialing their Shea Butter Hand Creams in all three of their wonderful scents. These scents were inspired by the tradition of mixing and blending home grown herbs and floral essences.  The Beau Jardin range is packed with lovely ingredients like Shea butter, vitamin E, oat bran, almond oil and contains no parabens or sulphates.

The three different scents include; Citrus Grove, Rose and Geranium, and Lavender and Jasmine. They are really light, and pretty, floral scents - quite traditional but not so traditional they smell like old lady perfume.

I love their little motto - “a treat for today springing from the wisdom of yesterday”

The hand cream is lovely and rich. It soaks into the skin to leave your hands silky smooth. The tube does take a little warming up to help get the cream out easier – if you don’t you’ll be squeezing for some time as it is quite a thick cream. But don’t let its thickness put you off, when  it warms into the skin it’s pure luxury.

I have really enjoyed using the creams; they keep my hands soft and smell great – a really top product all round and not too badly priced at £8 for the set of three! They are small so good to keep in your handbag - and I like to swap and change depending on my mood. Overall I would recommend them and their packaging means they also make great gifts. You can buy these pretty potions from the Heathcote and Ivy website here.

p.s - there is an offer at the mo if you spend over £15, see below..

Beauty // Mini Makeup Haul

Thursday, 28 August 2014

I popped into Boots on my way home from work today, and picked up a few treats from the Rimmel stand.

I'm by no means a makeup snob, but I tend to buy mainly Bobbi Brown and MAC makeup for myself, but every now and then a drug store brand catches my eye.

I used to use a lot of Rimmel in my teens, it was always very affordable and actually pretty good!

I've been reading a lot of good things lately about their 'Wake Me Up' foundation - so thought I'd give it a go! I only wear foundation when I'm off out somewhere nice, or have a meeting with work. I like a medium to full coverage that is buildable and moisturising - there's nothing worse than a tight face from overtly drying foundation! At a mere £8.99, it was also a complete bargain - so why not!

Review // My Makeup Brushes and 10% off code!

Wednesday, 27 November 2013

One of the most important pieces of kit for any aspiring, or fully fledged, makeup artist is a good set of professional quality brushes. When I started my makeup course we were given a list of recommended brush sets - all from the amazing Crown Brush website.

The sets they offer are really fab, especially if you are just starting out and want a pretty full set to get you going. Of course, most of us have added to our sets with other brushes from other brands - and other Crown Brushes too!

I opted for the 611 23 Piece Professional Set at £61.99 as I felt it was a good complete set to start with - and it comes in a nifty brush roll too! The set contains 23 different brushes including your foundation, powder, blusher, lip liner, concealer, fan brush and brow groomer - so a really good selection. I find the brushes really easy to use, they are soft on the skin and apply the makeup well. I teamed this with the Crown Brush makeup brush cleanser - a really top product and surprisingly smells pretty good too!

I really like the brushes, they do give you a really great selection. I will review my favourite brushes in another post soon  - but I wanted to share this with you as I have a 10% off discount code to gift you with!

Use code FINNO2013 at the checkout to get 10% off your order!

Feature // AW13 Hair Trends for TGt

Monday, 23 September 2013

It was officially the first day of Autumn on Saturday. And, ready for the season ahead, my latest feature for TGt (Total Guide to) is now live with my top pics for Autumn and Winter Hair Trends 2013.

Here is a sneaky peek. If you click on the picture, or here, it will take you to the article - which gives you a few handy tips. With a big thanks to the lovely ladies at John Samuel's Hair Salon for styling the pictures.

Makeup // Chanel Nail Polish in Elixir

Monday, 26 August 2013

I was so excited to get my hands on this nail polish - especially as it's called Elixir! It's one of three new additions the the Chanel range and is part of their Superstition range for A/W13.

It's wears really well, you get a full coverage in one coat. Previously, I have been a little disappointed with the lack of pigment in some of Chanel's other colours - needing almost 4 coats to get a solid colour is never a good thing. This one however is packed with pigment and is solid in one clean sweep. The colour is a little deeper than in the pic - which makes it look a little pale. It's kinda like a mixed raspberry-cherry red toned down a little. I think it's fab - it's not so cherry red it glows and it's not so raspberry that it's pink. Perfect if you ask me!

A/W13 will be dominated with red nails and simple eyes. This is a great excuse for me to add to my somewhat limited red nail polish collection.

What nail polishes have caught your eyes of late? Do you have a favourite red shade? I'd love to know!

Beauty Review // Defensil Rescue Serum*

Wednesday, 24 July 2013

For anyone who has suffered from dry skin, you will know how uncomfortable and irritable it can be.

Having just moved house, I seem to be spending rather too much time with my hands in and out of water. Whether it's washing up the dishes, (we haven't had the dishwasher plumbed in yet), or cleaning bathrooms or other household/DIY chores - my hands seem to be constantly dry. I know, I hear you cry "wear marigolds??!!".. This would, of course, be a sensible solution - however I keep forgetting and they are a bit of an awkward hand accessory.

To overcome this chronic dryness I decided to take Defensil Rescue Serum* out of my cupboard. It's a great little serum for dry and sensitive skin. I have been using it over the winter to combat the random dry patches I'd been getting on my back (I think they were as a result of the skin meds I was taking at the time). The irritable feeling vanished almost as soon as the serum was applied.

The serum is fab. It's a gel-like cream and has a smooth texture. It slowly soaks into the skin and gives immediate relief without causing stinging or irritation. Defensil Rescue Serum* is Swiss created - which if you ask me must be a good thing - have you tried Swiss chocolate??

The Serum contains two key natural ingredients; an extract from the Cardiospermum seed and cold pressed Echium Oil. These two ingredients have been recognised in trials to stabilise and regenerate the skin barrier. It is these two ingredients which help to stop that itchy feeling associated with dry skin. In my case it really did make a huge difference.

The cream doesn't really smell of much which I think is a positive - there is nothing worse than the pong of medicated creams. The serum helps keep the skin in good condition and the patches I had soon went after I started using this little pot o' Swiss goodness.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been using it on my poor hands. Thankfully, it's working a treat! My hands really do feel less sore and less dry. Now I just need to sort out my nails or rather what is left of them.. Seriously, 'Hello House = Goodbye Nails' - people should warn you about this!

I would recommend this product to anyone with uncomfortably dry, or sensitive skin, in need of some TLC. The price is also pretty reasonable at £9.95 for 50ml - which lasts an age. It is available to buy from the Skin Shop - which is a great online beauty shop that has lots of treats for sensitive or problem skin.

Have you tried any rescue lotions or potions? I'd love to hear from you!

The Out -Takes of TGtS Summer Hair 2013

Friday, 12 July 2013

As you know, a few weeks back I spent a crazy hectic Saturday at the amazing John Samuel Hair Salon in Swindon doing a mini photo session for my article on Summer Hair in the Total Guide to Swindon's summer edit.

It was a fab afternoon. We had the lovely Sass and Holly at our disposal to help produce some top summer hair styles - check out the feature here if you haven't already.

The team at John Samuel's are amazing - Sass, who runs the salon, and stylist Holly did a fab job. A HUGE thank you to them for giving up a their Saturday afternoon. And of course my models! Unfortunately my stylist Chloe was away on holiday when we did the shoot - or else she'd of got her creative hands in the mix too.

I really can't rave enough about the salon. The design is sleek and stylish - the staff amazingly friendly, warm and welcoming. But, most importantly, I love what they do to my hair. They have years of expertise and use top of the range products and tools to help make the most of your locks. They also use the L'Oreal Colour range, which is great for me as I'm a fuss pot when it comes to my high lights!

You can keep updated on all the salon offers and what's new on the John Samuel Face Book Page.

We are having the Total Guide to Swindon Summer Party soon - and I can't wait! I have already booked my appointment with Chloe to make sure my hair looks fabulous! I'll let you know what look I went for when I actually decide.. which will more than likely be on the day..

Anyways, here are some of the out-takes from the afternoon, enjoy.

And finally, here is a picture of the ladies themselves, which I took from their website.
Sass, Holly and Chloe - thanks ladies!
